Why the Predator and Die Hard Director Went to Prison
John McTiernan helped make Arnold and Bruce Willis into superstars, but his hubris eventually caught up to him.

Prison wasn't as tough as John McTiernan expected. It was a former college campus in the Upper Midwest, no bars, no barbed wire, nothing. The only thing that was a little weird was that the locals, if they saw you on a crosswalk, would speed up and try to hit you. McTiernan served 10 months in the Federal Prison Camp in Yankton, South Dakota, after being convicted of lying to FBI agents about his involvement with Anthony Pellicano, the private investigator who served as inspiration for the show Ray Donovan. By then, McTiernan's once-enormous career as an action director was falling apart due to some enormous flops, and his latest film, a remake of the '70s James Caan classic Rollerball, was in danger of suffering the same fate.
