John Wick took the world by storm when it premiered in 2014. The movie’s reliance on lengthy, meticulously choreographed single takes set it apart from other contemporary action movies that anchored themselves on rapid cuts and close-up shots. The plot (in the first movie and the franchise at large) wasn’t basic either. There was a criminal underworld with specific rituals and a rather interesting rulebook. On top of that, the protagonist — who mostly prefers to do bad all by himself — was excellent.
